Throughout my career I've been incredibly fortunate to have had some wonderful and unforgettable experiences—backing up a major act for thousands of people, hearing myself on a track being played on the radio for the first time, meeting so many fantastic people—I really couldn't ask for more.
That said, I can't help but wonder what it would be like to play in my own version of an "all-star" band...— JV

Every great band needs a charismatic front man, and in my opinion there's no one in this era of music who commands a stage like Bruce Springsteen. When he lets it rip he rocks so hard that it borders on pandemonium, and when he brings the band down your heart melts. A prolific songwriter and a solid guitarist. It would be an honor to play behind him.

A solid bass player is a drummer's best friend—his bottom brother, if you will— someone who could lay down solid grooves, improvise when needed, and lock with me on the one. For me, that man would be James Jamerson, one of the original Funk Brothers and bassist on all of the old Motown hits among others. This cat suffered on the road, sometimes not knowing where his next meal was coming from, but always generated the most tasteful bass lines.

The lead guitar player...there are so many amazing players to choose from. My first choice would have to be the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn. Unfortunately I missed seeing him play live, but have seen many videos of him since his tragic death, and the phrase that comes to mind after watching and hearing him play: He's from another planet!

Nils Lofgren would be my next choice. I've performed on the same bill with him a number of times and have a great respect for his ability to flawlessly adapt to any musical situation. He's progressive, yet one of the most melodic guitarists I've ever heard...And he can crunch with the best of them. What more does a great band need?

My pianist of choice is Billy Joel. Another great songwriter, Billy also sings with conviction, plays the piano with intense passion, puttting everything he has into every note—my kind of guy. He's one of those performers who genuinely has a great time on stage, and I'd bet we'd have a blast talking shop after gigs.

My horn section would have to be the great Tower of Power Horns. Doc and the boys have played with everyone from James Brown to Tom Jones to Huey Lewis & The News. I have the most fun on stage when performing with a talented horn section, and these guys are the best.
